UNRIVALED PERFORMANCE

They say that competition improves the breed. But here at Öhlins, competition created the breed. Since day one, we’ve been a company with a singular focus—winning races. We channel these results into the ideation and design of new automotive products, as well as the continuous improvement of existing lines. We transfer the lessons we’ve learned from winning races directly to our aftermarket programs, where genuine enthusiasts can benefit from premium suspension products for their cars.

CAR SUSPENSION

The car suspension is one of the most important systems in any vehicle. It links the chassis to the wheels through suspension parts such as springs, struts, dampers, and shock absorbers. Working together, these components manage the forces between the road and the car. As you drive, the suspension on a car soaks up bumps, vibrations, and rough surfaces. This improves comfort and reduces wear on the chassis and other parts. A well-tuned suspension also enhances traction and stability, keeping the tires in steady contact with the ground so you can drive with confidence in any situation.

WHAT IS A CAR SUSPENSION?

A car suspension system connects the body of the car to its wheels and manages how forces from the road affect stability and comfort. It is made up of car suspension springs, shocks, struts, and linkages. Together, they balance control, safety, and ride quality.

The system has three key functions:

•  Absorbing impacts: It smooths out bumps, potholes, and vibrations.

•  Maintaining stability: It keeps the wheels firmly on the ground for consistent grip.

•  Enhancing handling: It limits roll, pitch, and squat so the car reacts predictably to
   driver input.

By filtering these forces, the suspension in a car makes the ride safer, smoother, and more controlled for both driver and passengers.

THE ROLE OF CAR SUSPENSION FOR YOUR CAR'S PERFORMANCE

Car suspension parts like shocks, struts, and dampers connect the chassis to the wheels and manage the forces from uneven roads. By controlling these movements, the suspension for cars helps the vehicle stay stable and predictable, while protecting the chassis and drivetrain from stress.

IMPACT ON COMFORT AND SAFETY

A well-designed suspension system smooths out rough roads, reducing fatigue on long drives and improving passenger comfort. At the same time, a properly working front car suspension and rear suspension keep the tires firmly on the road, improving safety in emergency situations and reducing stopping distances.

SUSPENSION’S ROLE IN AUTOMOTIVE HANDLING

Suspension also plays a key role in how a car handles corners, braking, and acceleration. High-quality dampers and struts reduce body roll, squat, and nose dive, giving the car a more balanced feel. The result is sharper steering, better maneuverability, and more confidence at the wheel.

TYPES OF CAR SUSPENSION SYSTEMS

Modern cars use a variety of suspension technologies, each offering different strengths and trade-offs in comfort, performance, and durability. The goal is always to absorb road irregularities and maintain stability, but the systems vary in complexity and capability.

TRADITIONAL SUSPENSION (MECHANICAL SYSTEMS)

Traditional systems use mechanical parts like coil springs, leaf springs, and hydraulic shocks. They are durable, simple, and affordable, which is why they are still common today.

Advantages: Reliable, easy to maintain, and cost-effective.
Disadvantages: Limited adjustability and less able to adapt to changing road conditions.

AIR SUSPENSION FOR CARS

Air suspension for cars replaces steel springs with air-filled bags or bellows, managed by compressors and valves. By adjusting the air pressure, the system can raise or lower the car for different situations.

Benefits: Adjustable ride height, smoother ride quality, and the flexibility to adapt to heavy loads or uneven conditions. Popular in luxury cars and SUVs.
Disadvantages: More complex and maintenance-heavy, with extra parts and electronics that can fail.

ADAPTIVE AND ACTIVE SUSPENSION SYSTEMS

Adaptive and active suspension systems represent the cutting edge of suspension technology. Using sensors and electronic control units, these systems adjust damping forces in real time based on driving style, road conditions, and vehicle speed.

How they work: Adaptive systems vary damper stiffness on demand, while fully active systems actively apply forces to counteract body movements such as roll and pitch.
Advantages: Superior handling, enhanced comfort, and optimized safety in all conditions.

CAR SUSPENSION PARTS AND COMPONENTS

A car suspension system is made up of several parts that all work together to improve safety, stability, and comfort. Each component has a specific role, and together they create the link between the vehicle and the road.

CAR SUSPENSION SPRINGS

Car suspension springs are the foundation of any suspension system. Their role is to absorb energy from bumps, potholes, and irregular road surfaces, keeping the wheels in contact with the ground and protecting the chassis from harsh impacts.

Types of springs:

•  Coil springs: The most common type, found in most
modern cars. They provide consistent support and work
    well with shock absorbers.

•  Leaf springs: Often found in trucks and heavy-duty
vehicles, built for carrying heavy loads.

•  Torsion bars: Less common, but used where space and
    weight are limited.

CAR SUSPENSION SHOCKS

Car suspension shocks (shock absorbers) control the motion of the springs. Without them, the car would continue to bounce after every bump. By converting kinetic energy into heat, shocks stabilize the vehicle, reduce vibrations, and keep the tires in consistent contact with the road, which improves comfort, grip, and braking performance.

OTHER KEY COMPONENTS (STABILIZER BARS, LINKS, BUSHINGS)

Other parts play a supporting role in the suspension on a car.

•  Stabilizer bars (anti-roll bars): Reduce body roll in
corners by spreading the load across the suspension.

•  Links: Connect suspension parts and transfer forces
    between them.

•  Bushings: Cushion metal parts, reduce noise, and allow
    controlled movement.

Together, these components make the suspension more stable, responsive, and comfortable in all driving conditions.
